NEMA Reference Information

NEMA Definition

National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) published ANSI/NEMA WD 6 to specify the Wiring Device specifications. Approved by American National Standards Institute (ANSI). These plugs, connectors and outlets all have unique pin positions that have been thoughtfully engineered to prevent connecting a higher rated plug to a lower rated connector which would be a fire hazard. Occasionally NEMA connector pin layouts are designed so that they can be down graded, in other words plugs rated for lower power draw can be connected to connectors with higher power rating for convenience purposes. We will discuss this more below.

How to tell the difference between NEMA Plugs and Connectors

NEMA designations are divided into two separate classifications, divided by a dash (-). The first set of numbers distinguishes the voltage and pole count, as well as wether it is grounded or not. We will go over each of these distinct groups below. The second set of numbers classifies the amperage rating, which will either be 15, 20, 30, 50, or 60 Amps. The Classification is followed with a P(Plug) or a C(Connector).

The Table below is designed to quickly aid you to figure out what NEMA plug, connector or outlet you have as well as what you need to connect to any of these. If you wish to learn more about each type of NEMA standard, or see detailed photos to compare to.. click on the View More tag once you have narrowed down the designation you need, or scroll down and browse our comprehensive guide to NEMA Plugs, Connectors and Outlets.
