Difference between international plug types

There are a handful of standard electrical power outlets that are uniquely specified by local standards and approvals. These power plug configurations are classified by “Type”, and all will have similar dimensional specs no matter where they are used in the world. Most plugs will be used in several different countries, which will change the power rating and the “standard” it was built to but they will still be identical in appearance. It is not recommended to use power cords in a country they were not approved for, because the manufacturer has designed the cable with considerations of the supply voltage of 1 country that may not be suitable or universal with the country you plan to bring it to.

The IEC plug types are used around the world, and their voltages and amperage rating changes based on where they are being used. This is due to local electrical safety, and the different distribution voltages and frequencies supplied around the world. International IEC Plug Type B Power Cords | 5-15P Style International Power

The IEC Type B Power Cables are found all around the globe from the United States to Guatemala to Japan. This plug type is grounded with a line and pin. The operating voltage and frequency will depend on the country, but the general configuration is the same. International IEC Type C Power Cables | Europlug Power Cords

The IEC Type C Power cords are powered through the ungrounded plug that is used throughout Europe and various regions of the world. These plugs are rated for 2.5 Amps and 250VAC and can be distinguished from other plug types by the two rounded pins on an elongated diamond shaped plug face. These cables are used to power small equipment that does not require a grounding conductor.

International IEC Type E, F and E/F | Schuko Power Cables

The Schuko Plug Type, also known as CEE7/7 or Type E/F is the most used plug in Europe. In countries that do not have their own 250 Volt plug type, they will often use the Schuko because of its robust design and superior safety features. This plug type is rated for 16 Amperes of power. We utilize the E/F configuration for our power cables because of the superior safety of the grounding feature.

International IEC Type G Fuse Protected Power Cables | BS1363 Power Cords

The type G Plug is rated for 250VAC and 13 Amps globally, and features a dedicated ground conductor and an internally fuse protected. The plug is easily identified from the fuse compartment located on the plug face. This added protection was designed as an additional safety measure for the end user. In the event of an electrical short, the amount of time before the over current device trips is greatly reduced by adding it at the plug instead of at the electrical panel.

The IEC Type I Plug type is 3 pin, grounded plug with 2 oblique blades rated for 250VAC and 10 – 15 Amperes globally. It is the standard plug type for many countries globally, however the largest countries of note are Argentina, Australia, China and New Zealand. Each country has its own unique approval agency that will determine if the cable is listed for use in that country. The Type J Swiss power plug type has 3 pins, one of which is a dedicate ground conductor that is orientated just above the other 2 load pins. It is rated for 250VAC and 10 or 16 Amps globally. It is rated for both 10 Amps and 16 Amps, but the 16 Amp plug has pins shaped more like a square which cannot be connected to the 10 Amp receptacle to prevent electrical fire hazard.

The IEC Type L Power Cables are most associated to the Italian CEI 23-16 Set of standards, which defines the 10- and 16-Amp configurations of this plug. It rated for 250 VAC and is the standard power plug for energizing common household appliances in Italy. The two plug types cannot be inserted into one another as they are not identically spaced. This is done to prevent electrical hazard by plugging a 16 Amp plug into an outlet rated for only 10 Amps.

The IEC Type M Power Cords are the heavier duty Type D (10 Amp Rated) plug type, and are rated for 250VAC and 15 Amps of power. They are used in many places globally but are know specifically for South Africa and India power. The South Africa SANS 164-1 and India IS 1293 are the same specifications for the design of the plug and have 3 pins, with a larger ground pin located above the 2 matching line pins.

International IEC Plug Type N Power Cables | NBR14136 Brazil Power

The Type N Brazil plug type comes in 2 variations rated for 10 Amps and 20 Amps each respectively. They each have slightly different sized pins that will prevent the 20 Amp plug from being plugged into a 10 Amp outlet, creating a fire hazard. These plugs are rated for 250VAC and come in a straight cord grip, or a down angled cord grip for installations in tight locations like behind couches or furniture.

The IEC 60320 C5 is a grounded 3 Wire connector rated up to 250V and 2.5 Amps Internationally or 125V and 10 Amps in North America. The C5 mates with a C6 inlet, and is commonly used for laptop power supplies, projectors, and some televisions. Being slightly smaller in size than the C13, the C5 can be a good choice for smaller appliances. This connector is sometimes referred to as a "Mickey Mouse" connector due to the shape of the connector looking similar to the kids television show character.

The IEC 60320 C7 is an ungrounded 2 Wire connector rated up to 250V and 2.5 Amps Internationally or 125V and 10 Amps in North America. The C7 mates with a C8 inlet, and is commonly used for laptop power supplies, video game consoles, televisions, and other double-insulated small appliances. This connector is sometimes referred to as a "Figure-8" or "Shotgun" connector due to it's shape. A variation of the C7 exists, sometimes referred to as a C7P or C7 Polarized, although it is not documented in the IEC 60320 standard. The C7P has one square side and one circular side so the connector only mates with the inlet using the correct pin configuration.

Most people know the C13 as 'the thing that plugs into my computer' because it is the standard connector used to power most desktop computers. In a desktop computer application, the most common cable is the NEMA 5-15P to C13, which connects your standard North American wall outlet to a desktop computer.

The IEC 320 C15 Power cable is used to power electrical devices that emit so much heat (intentionally or unintentionally) that they require a power connection that can withstand more than the 70 °C (158 °F) temperature rating of the standard C13. In combination with the C14 plug type, the use cases of this high-temperature cable are almost exclusively data center environments. This cable would most likely be found supplying a High-Powered Switch power from a rack-mounted PDU power supply source. If your equipment has a IEC320 C16 Inlet it should only be mated with the matching C15-Power Connector.

Australia/New Zealand AS/NZS 3112 10A 250V

The Australia AS/NZS 3112 3 Pin is the standard 3 Pin connector for Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and many other pacific island countries. This is a grounded connector with many different variations depending on the amperage rating. Due AS/NZS regulations, the "line" and "neutral" pins now must be insulated. The best way to determine what Australia AS/NZS 3112 3 Pin you need is by the ground pin which changes with the amperage rating. The 10A plug has similar thickness ground pin compared with line/load. The 15A plug has a slightly wider ground pin. The 20A plug has a thicker ground/line and load pin. The 25A plug has an inverted "L" shaped ground. The 32A plug has a sideways "U" shaped ground. The plugs are capable of upwards compadibility but not vice versa. (i.e. the 10A plug will fit in any connector).
