IEC 60320 C14 Plug Adapters

General Information:

The IEC 60320 C14 is a grounded 3 Wire Plug rated up to 250V and 15 Amps. The C14 plug is one of the most commonly used plugs in the data center industry, especially the Inlet version, which is found on the vast majority of Information Technology devices that are produced today. The IEC 60320 C14 is typically used with either 18awg SVT, 18awg SJT(OW), 16awg SJT(OW) or 14awg SJT(OW). The types of cordages used will change the rating of the overall cord set. This plug is very common in consumer, commercial and industrial applications which can create many different names for this plug across different industries like the computer plug, IEC plug, and more generalized names. Some also refer to this as the iec C13 plug, or the c13 power plug because of the C13 connector that it mates with.

What does the IEC 60320 C14 plug into?

The IEC 60320 C14 plug is designed to connect to the IEC 320 C13 connector and the outlet. The connector is found on a variety of 10-15A power cords, while the outlet is located on a variety of power supplies. The outlet is most commonly found on Power Distribution Units found in office, commercial, or data center settings as well as Power Adapter bricks.

General Information:

The IEC 60320 C7 is an ungrounded 2 Wire connector rated up to 250V and 2.5 Amps Internationally or 125V and 10 Amps in North America. This connector is commonly used to connect power to a device that does not require a ground because of double insulating material which prevents the user of the device from being electrocuted. The C7 mates with a C8 inlet, and is commonly used for laptop power supplies, video game consoles, televisions, and other double-insulated small appliances. This connector is sometimes referred to as a "Figure-8" or "Shotgun" connector due to it's shape. A variation of the C7 exists, sometimes referred to as a C7P or C7 Polarized, although it is not documented in the IEC 60320 standard. The C7P has one square side and one circular side so the connector only mates with the inlet using the correct pin configuration.

How to tell the difference between Polarized vs. Unpolarized? What does the C7 Connect to?

			Polarized The Polarized C7 Connector/ Polarized C8 Inlet will have a squared off side that will force polarity. In other words, if a device is not internally engineered to accept the line/ load in either orientation, the device will be wired with the polarized C8.
			Non-Polarized The Non Polarized C7 & Non Polarized C8 Inlet can be identified by a "shotgun" look, with symmetrical sides that allow the user to plug in the connector in either orientation because of superior internal wiring.

The C13 mates with a C14 inlet, and is commonly used in a jumper cable scenario in IT Installations providing power from a PDU to a server, router, switch or other computing device. Most people know the C13 as 'the thing that plugs into my computer' because it is the standard connector used to power most desktop computers. In a desktop computer application, the most common cable is the NEMA 5-15P to C13, which connects your standard North American wall outlet to a desktop computer. The iec 320 c13 c14 plug and connector are synonymous with Information Technology equipment primarily, but the C13 can be found powering equipment like medical devices and gaming consoles.

The C15 mates with a C16 inlet and can also be down graded to a C14 Inlet. C14 Inlet and is commonly used in IT Installations providing power from a PDU to a server, router, switch or other computing device. The C15 is a HIGH TEMPERATURE connector rated up to 120°C, unlike the 70°C rating of the C13. The C15 is commonly used in in electric kettles and other household appliances that involve higher temperatures than a normal C13 is made to withstand. There is a dimple located below the ground pin to ensure that the standard C13 connector cannot be plugged into the C16 Inlet which is used on high temperature applications. This design is utilized to allow this C15 connector to be used on both high temperature applications and standard applications, as to not limit the user. The C15 connector is commonly used with 18awg SJT(OW), 16awg SJT(OW), and 14awg SJT(OW).

What does the IEC 60320 C15 Connect to?

The IEC 60320 type C15 connector is designed to plug into the high temperature rated IEC 320 C16 Inlet. This inlet is commonly found on high performance IT Equipment that reaches heats that exceed the rating of the standard IEC C13 connector. This inlet is designed to reach temperatures up to 120*C. The C15 can also be plugged into a standard non-high temp application C14 Inlet, which is located on a wide variety of IT Equipment like computer monitors and switches.

The IEC 60320 C19 is a grounded 3 Wire connector rated up to 250V and 20 Amps. The C19 can be found on a variety of power cords, including NEMA to 320 Adapter cords, and International Plug types to IEC 320 connectors, but the most common application is the IEC 320 C20 to C19 power cord which is a a standard extension cord used to power high powered IT Equipment. The C19 is typically used in high powered blade server chassis, large network routers, and other IT equipment that draws more power than a standard C13 can accommodate.

What does the IEC 60320 C19 Connect to?

The IEC 60320 type C19 connector is designed to connect to the IEC 320 C20 plug and Inlet. THE C20 Plug is commonly found on power cords used in the data center industry. The C20 Inlet can be found on a variety of high powered IT Equipment ranging from switches to Un-Interrupted Power Supply systems.

The NEMA 5-15R is a 3 Wire grounded connector with forced polarity rated up to 125VAC and 15A. The connector can pair with either the 1-15P or the NEMA 5-15P. 5-15P is your standard household plug used for to connect small appliances such as TV's, Microwaves, hairdryers, etc to a wall outlet. The NEMA 5-15P is compatible with a Nema 5-20R T-Slot outlet, which is commonly found in new home installations. This is commonly found on our NEMA 5-15 Extension cords, which are commonly used to extend a 125V 15A power source to a location off of a standard 5-15R wall receptacle.

The NEMA 5-20R (T-Slot) is a 3 wire grounded connector rated up to 125VAC and 20A. The 5-20R T-Slot receptacles are often used when 20A circuits are installed due to flexibility of being downward compatible with the 5-15P. The Receptacles are the defacto power supply for all of North America. This connector is found on our 5-20 Extension cord Series, used commonly for extending power from a standard NEMA 5-20R wall receptacle to a given location for convenience. It is commonly used with 12awg or 15awg depending on the application and the required amperage.

What does the NEMA 5-20R Connect to?

The NEMA 5-20R Connector is designed to connect to both the NEMA 5-15P and the NEMA 5-20P. The T-Slot allows both variations to be plugged in, making this connector more versatile and therefore more widely used across all industries.
