What is the Saf-D-Grid Power Connection System?

The Saf-D-Grid connector system is a safe appliance power connector for various applications, including Server, Telecommunications and other devices up to 600VDC. The connector meets international safety requirements for low voltage, hazardous applications. (UL 950 & IEC60950). This connector is size compatible with the IEC320 C13 and C14 connection systems, making it a viable solution for Data Center applications.


What are some key features of the Saf-D-Grid Connection?

  • T-Latch Locking Mechanism:

    Proprietary locking mechanism, designed to mate with a Matching Saf-D-Grid Inlet. This prevents unwanted power loss to critical equipment from loose connections.

  • Earth First Connection:

    Internally, when the connector is mated with an electrical source the ground conductors are mated first and unmated last. This provides maximum electrical safety to ensure electrical current will default to the earth path.

  • Touch Safe:

    UL & IEC Finger Probe tested, as well as 3mm receptacle probe tested. This connector contains all electrical connection points inside of the housing, ensuring safety to all personnel.

  • Arcing Protection:

    The Saf-D-Grid housings contain the arc during mating and unmating while under-load. This minimizes the risk of electric shock to personnel.

  • Power Density:

    The Saf-D-Grid delivers up to 400V AC or DC at 30A, through the power cord application with a IEC320 C14, making it the highest power rated connector of this class. This allows the use of Saf-D-Grid in AC systems that require more power by increasing the wattage capability within an existing connector space.


Are there different types of Saf-D-Grid Connections?

There are two primary types of Saf-D-Grid Connectors, the 300VAC and 400V options. The Saf-D-Grid 400V is often used in the capacity of power cables. They each have their own respective designs, preventing cross connection between a 300V and 400V system. This superior design conceals electrical connection points within the housing, while also preventing a short circuit male-to-male connection.

Saf-D-Grid 400V series targets DC applications but is also rated for AC current with a single keying configuration. The majority of the Saf-D-Grid series we offer will be the 400V series.

IEC 60320 Connections


C14

IEC 60320 C14


The IEC 60320 C14 is a grounded 3 Wire Plug rated up to 250V and 15 Amps. The C14 plug is one of the most commonly used plugs in the data center industry, especially the Inlet version, which is found on the vast majority of Information Technology devices that are produced today. The IEC 60320 C14 is typically used with either 18awg SVT, 18awg SJT(OW), 16awg SJT(OW) or 14awg SJT(OW). The types of cordages used will change the rating of the overall cord set. This plug is very common in consumer, commercial and industrial applications which can create many different names for this plug across different industries like the computer plug, IEC plug, and more generalized names. Some also refer to this as the iec C13 plug, or the c13 power plug because of the C13 connector that it mates with.


IEC 60320 C20

IEC 60320 C20


The IEC 60320 C20 is a grounded 3 Wire Plug rated up to 250V and 20 Amps. It is commonly used with either 14awg or 12awg conductors, depending on the application and the power draw required for the device. The most common configuration for a C20 is in a jumper cable scenario, providing power from a PDU to a blade server chassis, high powered server, large network router, or similar device. The C20 is used in applications where the most common IEC320 plug, the C14 will not provide enough power. This plug is rated for temperatures up to 65*C. For applications where the temperature of the equipment exceeds 65 degree C, we recommend using the high tempature version: The IEC 60320 C22 High Temperature plug, which is rated for temperatures up to 155*C.


North American Connections


NEMA 5-20P


The NEMA 5-20P is a 3 Wire grounded plug featuring two blades and one ground pin rated up to 125V AC and 20 Amps. The NEMA 5-20P is used in applications that require higher power draw such as large refrigerators, space heaters, large kitchen mixers, etc. The 5-20R T-Slot receptacle allows you to plug in either a 5-20P or a 5-15P plug, allowing greater flexibility. In modern home installations, 5-20R T-Slot receptacles are often used when 20A circuits are installed due to flexibility of being downward compatible with the 5-15P.


NEMA L5-20P


The NEMA L5-20P is a 3 Wire grounded plug with a hot, neutral , and ground pin rated up to 125V and 20A. This plug can be locked into place on the matching receptacle which prevents nuisance disconnection. This plug looks nearly identical to L5-30P but is slightly smaller in pin thickness and alignment circumference. Refer to either plug, receptacle or face plate to find out your amp requirements.


NEMA 6-20P


The NEMA 6-20P is a 3 Wire grounded plug featuring two line blades and a ground pin, rated up to 250V AC and 20A. The 6-20P has a horizontal and vertical blade to prevent attachment to lower ampere rated receptacles. However, the 6-20R (receptacle) offers a "T" slot allowing connection of both a 6-20P and a 6-15P. Common applications are commercial ovens and large air condition units. The NEMA 6-20P Series does not feature a neutral conductor.


NEMA L6-20P


The NEMA L6-20P is a 3 wire grounded plug with a hot, hot and ground pin rated up to 250V and 20A. This plug can be locked into place on the matching receptacle which prevents nuisance disconnection. This plug is commonly found on in-rack power distribution units (PDU) where standard electrical service exceeds 125V, also in industrial settings to supply power to equipment or power tools.


International Connections


IRAM 2073


The Argentina IRAM 2073 is a 3 pin plug rated up to 250V and 10A. This is the standard 3 Pin plug for Argentina and has a temperature range of -40C to 75C. Common power cord set connectors with this plug are IEC 60320 C13, C15, C5, and C19.


AS/NZ 3112


The Australia AS/NZS 3112 3 Pin is the standard 3 Pin plug for Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and many other pacific island countries. This is a grounded plug with many different variations depending on the amperage rating. Due AS/NZS regulations, the "line" and "neutral" pins now must be insulated. The best way to determine what Australia AS/NZS 3112 3 Pin you need is by the ground pin which changes with the amperage rating. The 10A plug has similar thickness ground pin compared with line/load. The 15A plug has a slightly wider ground pin. The 20A plug has a thicker ground/line and load pin. The 25A plug has an inverted "L" shaped ground. The 32A plug has a sideways "U" shaped ground. The plugs are capable of upwards compadibility but not vice versa. (i.e. the 10A plug will fit in any connector).

The Brazil NBR14136 (3 Pin 3.7mm Grounded) is a 2 Pole, grounded rated for 250V and 10A.


GB2099


The China GB2099 3Pin is a 2 pole, grounded plug that is rated for 16A and 250V. This is the standard heavy duty 250V power plug for china.

The European Schuko CEE7/7 - Straight plug is a 2 pole, grounded plug. The plug has two round pins (line and neutral) each 4.8 mm diameter, 19 mm long and spaced 19 mm apart. The plug also has two flat areas (top and bottom sides) and a female contact for the ground. The CEE7/7 Schuko is a hybrid plug designed to fit into both type C and F Schuko receptacle. Schuko is an acronym of the german word "Schutzkontakt" meaning safety contact which is visible on the top and bottom of the plug end.

The South Africa SANS 164-1 (BS546) 3Pin is a 2 pole grounded plug rated up to 250V and 16A. This is the most commonly used plug and socket system currently in use in South America today. This plug is identical to the BS 546 15A plug, however is rated for 16A under South African

There are many options available for the IEC 60309 Plug types, depending on the Voltage, Amperage and Conductor count. These plugs also have Splash and Weather resistance ratings based on the environment they are designed for. IEC 60309 Plugs and connectors are generally found in industrial settings since they are bulkier and can withstand more abuse than a standard power connector.
