International Power Guide

What are some global similarities in terms of power supply?

Almost all countries have grounded and non-grounded cables. For standard use in residential and commercial applications this will mean grounded cables will have 3 exposed pins, and non-grounded will have 2 pins. In most cases, non-grounded plugs will be able to connect to a grounded power source. Products without a ground conductor generally are electronic devices that draw low power, and have been manufactured with the neccisary components to prevent electrical shock to the user.

Why do some plugs from one country look identical to plugs of another?

Some countries, such as (Unitied States and Japan), (China and Argentina), (Singapore and UK) and many more share similar looking power plugs. Due to various geo-political reasons, some countries will have identical power plugs that opperate the same and can be plugged in to a power outlet in the other country. The only difference in each of these is the Approvals which the plugs have been marked by the manufacturer. Cross application can be done in some applications, but is not advised.

What products are available to help me use power outlets around the world when traveling?

There are many adapter products available that allow you to connect a plug designed for use in say.. America, and plug it into a power source in Europe. There are also Universal Adapters available that will accept any plug type, and can be used in the country that the adapter is designed for.

Can I plug in my device in a different country if the wall outlet looks the same?

Each country has its own standard household voltage and frequency. Although some of these combinations are more common than others, it is still advised to refer to our voltage and frequency chart below to make sure that you do not need an adapter to plug your devices into the outlets of the country you are currently visiting. If you are plugging in a device that is not an electronic devices made in the last 15 years, there is also a chance you will need to consider your total power draw. Don't worry, this is easier than it sounds! Just check the power draw on your device's faceplate (Wattage), and divide the countries operating voltage found in the table below. This will give you the required amperage needed to power your device. You can then refer to the plug type information below to see if that is within the tolerance allowed.
